2009 Grants
"Candidate gene analysis for Gastric Dilatation – Volvulus" Gastric Dilatation Volvulus is the second leading cause of death in canines, however, the molecular and genetic basis of this disease has not been determined. The etiology of this disease is complex, however stress does seem to play a role in this process. Genes involved in the stress response will be studied for any possible associations with bloat. The funds requested will be used for DNA sequencing of candidate genes and associated reagents.

Amount requested: $5.000.00 Research Institution: DOGenes, Inc Lead researcher: Mary Whiteley, Ph.D.
"Clinical Evaluation of NOTES Gastropexy as a Prophylactic Procedure for Prevention of Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus in Collie Dogs."

The purpose of this research is to evaluate the feasibility of performing NOTES Gastropexy in Collies: Ten Collies recruited from breeders will undergo a novel transoral procedure to perform prophylactic gastropexy for the prevention of gastric dilation and volvulus. NOTES means "natural orifice translumenal endoscopic surgery." The Collies will be followed clinically, endoscopically, and with ultrasound imaging following surgery every 4 months for one year.

Amount requested: $20,955 Research Institution: Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine Lead researcher: Dr. Lynetta Freeman, DVM, MS, Diplomat ACVS, Associate Professor of Small Animal Surgery

Collie Health Foundation Grants Overview

Since the inception of the Collie Health Foundation, over $650,000 has been given in support of various Collie Health related projects. The Grants Committee of the Collie Health Foundation functions as a gatherer and screener of prospective grants that the Board of Directors decides whether to fund. The Chairman of the Committee is appointed by the President and the Committee is appointed jointly by the President and the Committee Chairman. Currently, Nancy Kelso, DVM is the Committee Chairman and the Committee consists of Cindi Bossart, DVM. William Brokken, MD, David Hansen, DVM, Gayle Kaye, and Michael Esch.

The Grants review and award process operates on an annual cycle. Solicitations for grant requests are sent out in September of each year with a request that the responses be returned to the Committee Chairman by December. Between January and June, the grant requests are reviewed by the Grants Committee and any grant requests that the Committee approves are sent to the Board of Directors for approval to fund. The grants that the Board approves for funding are funded by the Treasurer by the end of June.

In addition to our own grant solicitation process, we work closely with the American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation. Some of the grants the Board approves for funding come to us through the Canine Health Foundation. Those grants undergo the same review process by the Grants Committee as the ones that come to us directly from the researchers.
