FINAL REPORT FOR ONLINE HEALTH SURVEY

Submitted by Helga Kane, Health Survey Coordinator

Since the inception of the Health Survey on the Foundation website, we have received 394 reports covering 623 collies.  Our sincere thanks go to everyone who participated in the Survey; your contributions are of great value.   This input from the fancy has given us the data to ascertain which problems are most prevalent in our breed and will give the Foundation clear direction as to which research projects are needed and will require our support in order to best benefit the collie.  The most common problems that were found are as follows:

Leading the list was 150 cases of Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA), which included 5 specific incidents of Detached Retinas and 3 of Colobomas.

Next in extent of occurrence were Orthopedic problems which included 52 reports of Arthritis.  Although most were determined to be in older dogs, at least 19 cases of arthritis were reported to have occurred in dogs less than 7 years of age. There were also 20 cases of Hip Dysplasia reported.

Among the skin disorders detailed, 39 were reported to be Demodex Mange and 9 were cases of Dermatomyositis (DM).

47 cases of Cancer were reported in collies ranging in age from puppies through 13 years.

We were informed of 33 cases of Bloat; 9 cases of Colitis; and 13 dogs with Liver Disease (which included 2 Cushings Disease).  2 reports of Esophogeal disorders were noted.

Of the 33 incidents of Heart Disease reported, only 10 of them were in dogs over 10 years of age.  Although only 2 cases of VWD were reported, 5 more were listed as carriers of this blood disease.

32 collies were listed as being Hypothyroid; 27collies were designated as suffering from Allergies; and Autoimmune problems were reported in 20 dogs.

Of the 32 dogs reported as suffering from Seizures, 10 were actually diagnosed as having Epilepsy.   13 other cases of neurological disorders were also identified.

14 dogs were reported to have Kidney disorders; 27 females were reported with Reproductive problems ranging from Pyometra (8) to whelping problems and Urinary incontinence in spayed bitches; 2 monorchid males were listed.
